There are many research studies providing evidence that health and well-being coaching can make significant differences in both physical and mental health. These are just a select few articles from the growing body of research written on the benefits of health and well-being coaching.

The results of a Mayo Clinic study (2014) found that overall quality of life and its five separate domains, depressive symptoms, and perceived stress levels improved significantly over 12 weeks and these improvements were maintained when following up at 24 weeks.

“At Mayo Clinic, the wellness coaches are in the employee healthy living center, which is dedicated to physical activity, so people come in with the idea that we’re going to weigh them and encourage them to walk more. But people’s goals often change during the wellness coaching process, which can transform it into being about so much more, including stress management, healthy sleep and relationships,” explains Matthew M. Clark, Ph.D., L.P., a clinical psychologist at Mayo Clinic’s campus in Minnesota.

This is an article by a doctor, Peter Grinspoon, M.D., who is also a certified health and wellness coach, extolling the benefits of health and well-being coaching.

Unlike health fads that come and go, health coaching has strong evidence behind it backing its effectiveness for improving health and well-being. Becoming a health coach has been deeply rewarding to me, because it is rare in life that you get to promote happiness, build resiliency, save people money, and help people live longer and more fulfilling lives at the same time.

A review of studies of outcomes following health coaching found significant results in several areas of health:

“Health coaching is an effective patient education method that can be used in primary and community health care and hospitals. It can be used to motivate and take advantage of a patient’s, willingness to change their life-style and support patient’s self-based health care. At its best, health coaching supports a patient in weight management, increases physical activity, and improves their self-efficacy and physical and mental health.”
“Statistically significant results were found in the physiological, behavioral, psychological and social outcomes of patients.”
“Reductions in body weight were obtained in all studies in which it was measured.”
“Positive psychological outcomes were, in particular, self-efficacy and mental health status.”
